Web design process for small businesses
7 min read · 2025-05-04

A clear, step-by-step web design process built for small Zimbabwean businesses — on time, on budget and ready to grow.
Most small business owners in Zimbabwe have never been through a web design project before. The whole thing can feel like a black box. Here is exactly what a good process looks like, so you know what to expect and what to push back on.
Stage 1: Discovery (week 1)
We start with a one-hour call to understand your business, your customers, your competitors and your goals for the website. By the end of week one, we deliver a short brief that includes your target keywords, the sitemap (every page the site will have) and the success metrics (calls, forms, sales).
Stage 2: Strategy and wireframes (week 2)
Before any design work happens, we sketch the layout of every page in low fidelity. This is where we decide what goes above the fold on the homepage, where the testimonials live, and how the contact flow works. Wireframes are quick to change. Designs are not.
Stage 3: Design (weeks 3 to 4)
We design the homepage first, in full colour, using your brand. Once you approve the look, we apply the same style to inner pages. You get two free rounds of revisions per page. We always show designs on both desktop and mobile.
Stage 4: Development (weeks 4 to 6)
We build the site on your chosen platform — usually WordPress. Every page is mobile-first, SEO-optimised and built for speed. We connect your domain, hosting, email and Google Analytics. We add forms, maps, WhatsApp links and any integrations you need.
Stage 5: Content and SEO (week 6)
We load all your content, write meta titles and descriptions, add schema, optimise images and submit your sitemap to Google Search Console. If we are writing the copy, this happens in parallel.
Stage 6: Quality assurance (week 6)
Before launch we test every page on Chrome, Safari and Firefox, on iPhone and Android. We check forms, links, speed and broken images. We give you a checklist to test it yourself.
Stage 7: Launch and training (week 7)
We push the site live, monitor for issues for 48 hours, and train your team to update text, add blog posts and replace images. You get a recorded training video and a written guide.
Stage 8: Care plan (ongoing)
After launch we offer optional monthly care plans that cover updates, security, backups, small content changes and basic SEO. Most clients pick a plan in the US$50 to US$150 range.
How long does it really take?
A standard small business site takes 5 to 7 weeks from kick-off to launch. The two things that can slow it down are slow content and slow feedback from the client. Be ready to provide photos, copy and approvals on time and your site will go live faster.
