How to write website copy that ranks
8 min read · 2025-04-26

A practical framework for writing service-page copy that ranks on Google, reads naturally and converts visitors into customers.
Most service pages on Zimbabwean websites read the same way. A vague headline, two paragraphs of company history, a list of services and a contact form. They do not rank, they do not convert and they do not sound like the business owner ever read them. Here is a better way.
Start with the question your customer is typing
Before you write a single word, decide what search you want to win. For a builder in Harare, it might be 'house builders in Harare'. For a wedding photographer, it could be 'wedding photographer Harare prices'. Type it into Google. Read the top three results. Note which questions they answer well and which ones they skip. Your job is to answer them all, better.
Write a headline that promises one clear thing
The H1 should be short, specific and include the main keyword. 'Affordable house builders in Harare with a 12-month workmanship guarantee' beats 'Welcome to our website'. Promise one clear benefit. Save the company history for the about page.
Lead with the benefit, then the proof
The first paragraph should answer 'why should I care' in plain language. The second paragraph should prove it with a number, a testimonial or a case result. People scan, then commit. Reward the scanner with the answer up front.
Use H2s like signposts
Break your page into H2 sections that match what your customer wants to know. Common sections include 'Our process', 'What is included', 'Pricing', 'Areas we serve', 'FAQs' and 'Why choose us'. Google loves clear structure. Customers do too.
Use real numbers and real names
Vague claims do nothing. 'We are the best' means nothing. 'Over 80 builds delivered in Harare and Norton since 2019, average customer rating 4.8 of 5' is concrete and trustworthy.
Add an FAQ section
Every page should end with an FAQ that answers the five questions you get asked most. Add FAQ schema so Google can show your answers as rich results. This is one of the easiest ways to win extra space on page one.
Write at a grade 10 reading level
Short sentences. Plain words. One idea per paragraph. If your sister, your driver and your CEO can all read it without stopping, you are doing it right. Long sentences impress nobody and rank nowhere.
Always end with a clear next step
Tell the visitor exactly what to do next. 'Call us on +263 776 803 255' or 'WhatsApp us for a fixed quote in 24 hours' beats a tiny contact form at the bottom of the page.
Refresh every six months
Update your top pages twice a year. Add new testimonials, refresh prices, expand FAQs. Google loves content that is kept fresh, and so do your customers.
