SEO audit checklist for Zimbabwe websites

A practical, no-nonsense SEO audit checklist any Zimbabwean business can use to find quick wins and rank higher on Google.

Most websites in Zimbabwe leave easy SEO wins on the table. Slow pages, missing titles, broken links, no schema. None of these problems are hard to fix. You just need to know where to look. Use this checklist to audit your own site in an afternoon.

1. Crawlability and indexing

Open Google and search 'site:yourdomain.co.zw'. The number of results should roughly match the number of pages on your site. If it is much lower, Google is not indexing everything. Check your robots.txt is not blocking key pages. Make sure your XML sitemap is submitted in Google Search Console.

2. Page speed and Core Web Vitals

Run your homepage through Google PageSpeed Insights. Aim for a mobile score above 80. Pay attention to Largest Contentful Paint (under 2.5 seconds), Interaction to Next Paint (under 200 ms) and Cumulative Layout Shift (under 0.1). Compress your images, remove unused plugins, and enable caching.

3. Mobile usability

Open your site on your phone. Are buttons easy to tap? Is text readable without zooming? Does the menu open cleanly? Then run Google's Mobile-Friendly Test. Fix anything that fails.

4. Titles and meta descriptions

Every page should have a unique title under 60 characters and a unique meta description under 160 characters. The title should include your main keyword. The description should include a clear benefit and a soft call to action. Generic titles like 'Home' or 'Services' are wasted ranking power.

5. Headings (H1, H2, H3)

Every page needs exactly one H1 that includes the main keyword. Use H2s for major sections and H3s for subsections. Skipping the heading structure is one of the most common SEO mistakes in Zimbabwe.

6. Internal linking

Link related pages together. Your service pages should link to relevant blog posts. Your blog posts should link to relevant service pages. This spreads ranking power around your site and helps Google understand what each page is about.

7. Image SEO

Every important image needs a descriptive file name (avoid IMG_1234.jpg) and a clear alt text that describes what the image shows. Compress every image. Use modern formats like WebP where possible.

8. Schema markup

Add structured data so Google can show rich results. At a minimum add Organization or LocalBusiness schema sitewide, FAQ schema on pages with FAQs, Article schema on blog posts and BreadcrumbList schema everywhere.

9. Backlinks

Use a free tool like Ahrefs Webmaster Tools to see who links to you. Disavow obvious spam links. Plan a small monthly outreach campaign to earn one or two strong new links each month from Zimbabwean directories, industry blogs or partners.

10. Content quality

Your top pages should have at least 600 to 1,200 words of useful content that answers the visitor's question. Refresh old posts every six months. Remove or merge thin pages that no one reads.

11. Local SEO essentials

Make sure your Google Business Profile is fully filled in, your name, address and phone number match exactly on your website, and you have at least ten recent reviews.

12. Track and repeat

Set up Google Search Console and Google Analytics 4. Check them at least once a month. SEO is not a one-off project — it is an ongoing habit. The sites that win in Zimbabwe are the ones that take small, steady steps every month.
